Etiology

- desquamative interstitial pneumonia (DIP)
- respiratory bronchiolitis associated with interstitial lung disease
- Langerhans cell histiocytosis
- drug reactions

- chronic alveolar damage
- eosinophilic pneumonia
- pneumoconioses

  • talcosis
  • hadr metal
  • asbestosis

- obstructive pneumonia (foamy macrophages)
- exogenous lipoid pneumonia
- lipid storage diseases
- infections in immunocompromised patients (histiocytic pneumonia)
- focal microscopic finding in many conditions
