Flexner rosettes

Flexner-Wintersteiner rosettes are found in retinoblastoma. They are composed of tumor cells surrounding a lumen of cytoplasmic extensions.

Differential diagnosis

- Homer-Wright rosettes
- ependymal rosettes

Neuroblastomas have Homer-Wright rosettes, which are also found in PNETs and medulloblastomas. They are composed of tumor cells surrounding neuropil.

Ependymal rosettes, found in ependymoma, are composed of tumor cells with an empty lumen.

Perivascular pseudorosettes are composed of tumor cells surround a blood vessel. They are commonly found in neural tumors: ependymomas, PNETs medulloblastomas, glioblastomas, neuroblastomas and central neurocytomas.
