eosinophilic metaplasia of the endometrium / oxyphilic metaplasia ; oncocytic cell change; oncocytic metaplasia of the endometrium

Definition: In eosinophilic (oncocytic) metaplasia, the cytoplasm of endometrial cells becomes voluminous and strongly acidophilic. This lesion is often seen together with mucinous metaplasia and is associated with excessive estrogen stimulation.

Synopsis

- Estrogen induced
- resembles atypical hyperplasia except there is no atypia
- non-specific and very common;
- associated with endometrial mucinous metaplasia and endometrial tubal metaplasia (Mod Pathol 2005;18:1243)
