Definition : Metallosis is the putative medical condition involving deposition and build-up of metal debris in the soft tissues of the body.


- Classic finding in pelvic lymph node from male patient undergoing radical prostatectomy & LN dissection: "dust" - black or brown-tinged particles, associated with a prior history of arthroscopic surgery (hip/knee)

- synovial metallosis and metal-induced synovitis


- granular histiocytes in hip replacement / arthroplasty effect : metallosis

  • also occurs at sites away from the THA, esp. in lymph nodes.
  • The debris may be metal and/or polyethylene

- lymphadenopathy
- marked paracortical expansion by histiocytes with tiny shards of black metal c/w metal wear debris from joint replacement.
