The gastrointestinal wall surrounding the lumen of the gastrointestinal tract is made up of four layers of specialised tissue – from the lumen outwards:
- digestive mucosa
- digestive submucosa
- digestive muscular layer
- digestive serosa (if the tissue is intraperitoneal) / Adventitia (if the tissue is retroperitoneal)
